LEE COUNTY, Fla. - One man is dead after deputies opened fire in South Fort Myers.
He has been positively identified as 21-year-old Joseph Powell, of 12778 Vista Pine Circle in Fort Myers.
It started around 2:00 a.m. after the Sheriff's Office got reports of a disturbance at Cadillac Jack's bar.
Deputies tell WINK News witnesses reported 25-50 people were fighting in a parking lot there, and at least one person was armed. When deputies showed up, the suspects fled in their vehicles.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office says responding deputies were able to pull over one car, near the intersection of Alico Rd. and U.S. 41. That's when the passenger got out, and fled on foot, a Sheriff's Office spokesperson says. The passenger exchanged gunfire with deputies, and the suspect was killed at the scene, according to that spokesperson.
The deputies were uninjured and were placed on administrative leave, which is a standard procedure.
