LEHIGH ACRES, Fla.- On Monday, at roughly 11:00 p.m. Lee County Sheriff's Office Deputies responded to a reported shooting at 2701 21st Street SW, Lehigh Acres.

The investigation revealed several people were at the residence for a party when there was a knock on the door. The victim opened the door and was immediately shot in the face with handgun by a Hispanic male wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, dark pants and a black bandana. The bullet struck the victim in his left cheek. He was airlifted to the hospital as a trauma alert.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled into a nearby wooded area. A deputy patrolling in the area was flagged down by witnesses who told him the suspect may have left in a small grey vehicle.

Another deputy responding to the call observed a vehicle driving away from the scene that matched the information being broadcast to all responding units. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle and part of a handgun could be seen through the back window under the driver’s seat. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was identified as Darwin Mejia. 18. He was wearing gloves and the same clothing described by witnesses at the scene.

Further investigation revealed Mejia had a vendetta against some of the people at the residence. He deliberately went to the home to shoot and kill individuals within the home.

Mejia, of 8192 Egret Road in Fort Myers, has been charged with one count of Attempted First Degree Premeditated Murder.

The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Christopher Aleman, 21, of Lehigh Acres. He is currently in stable condition.
