LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Wrestling great James Brian Hellwig, known as The Ultimate Warrior, has died, days after being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

The Ultimate Warrior, 54, was one of the most iconic wrestlers of all time, rising to popularity during the golden age of wrestling in the late 1980s.

Warrior went toe-to-toe in the ring with fellow legends such as Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant.

He had been inducted into the WWEE Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 5, the night before Wrestlemania XXX launched, according to TMZ.

WWE released a statement on their website, stating, “WWE is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of the most iconic WWE Superstars ever, The Ultimate Warrior.”

Warrior began his professional wrestling career in 1987, becoming the WWE Champion at WrestleMania VI in a match against Hogan, according to WWE.

Details of his passing have not yet been released.
