MIDLAND CITY, Ala. - The FBI just released how agents rescued a kindergartner held hostage for almost a week.
That kindergartner, Ethan, is safe at home and celebrating his 6th birthday.
Agents said throughout the week, they developed a routine with suspect Jimmy Lee Dykes. He would ask for supplies and they would leave them at the entrance to his underground bunker.
On Monday, when Dykes climbed a ladder to open the door, agents said he was off-balance and vulnerable. The FBI dropped two stun-grenades into the bunker. The noise and blinding flashes disoriented him. Within seconds, four team members entered the bunker. Officials say Dykes shot at them, but missed. They returned fire multiple times, shot and killed Dykes and rescued the boy.
Ethan was physically unharmed, but relatives say they're worried about long-term emotional injury.
