By now you know the Giants won the Super Bowl on Sunday night, but who was the big winner when it came to the highly-anticipated commercials?
While the ads are always fun to watch, some advertising experts are lamenting the lack of surprises last night. The E-Trade baby, the Budweiser Clydesdales and the Coca Cola polar bears were expected.
It's not a new formula, advertisers know sex sells and they tried to capitalize last night. Toyota re-invented a couch with women wearing bikinis. Teleflora, Kia and Fiat all used beautiful ladies to pitch their products. And soccer stud David Beckham went nearly naked to sell his new underwear.
The cute factor made a comeback. Doritos used both dogs and babies to sell its chips. The Bud Light "we-go" dog was a crowd favorite. And a Skechers spot with a French bulldog winning a greyhound race while wearing new running shoes was a big hit. (The pup moon-walking across the finish line was a nice, unexpected twist.)
Celebrities stepped in as pitch-men this year. Clint Eastwood promoted the motor city in a two minute spot for Chrysler. Deion Sanders, Donald Trump and Apollo Anton Ohno all lent themselves to a Century 21 ad. And Elton John played a king in Pepsi's latest commercial.
The buzz for days leading up to the game was a snippet of Mathew Broderick reprising his role as Ferris Bueller in one commercial. Many hoped it was a sneak peek at a trailer for a sequel to the movie, but alas, Broderick was just playing hooky from work in his Honda CRV.
