 NEW YORK (AP) - One day after the Dow lost more than 500 points, stocks have opened higher -- but those gains quickly disappeared.
The Dow was up by more than 100 points in the opening minutes, after investors were encouraged by today's better-than-expected unemployment report. But minutes later, the major indexes were in negative territory.
The U.S. markets indexes have fallen 10 percent from their spring highs.
Global stock markets plummeted today, amid fears that the U.S. may be heading back into recession.
The leaders of some European countries are holding an emergency meeting by phone today, to discuss the jittery markets and the European financial crisis.
