MARI, Cyprus (AP) - Cyprus authorities say the island's navy chief was among 12 people who were killed when dozens of containers of gunpowder seized from an Iranian cargo ship exploded on a Cypriot naval base.

A joint police and national guard statement said on Monday that navy chief Andreas Ioannides was among the fatalities. Also killed was base commander Lambros Lambrou.

Four navy personnel and six firefighters also died.

The blast also wounded 62 and prompted the resignation of defense minister and military chief.
