WASHINGTON- President Barack Obama says standardized tests are often used to punish teachers and students and shouldn't be the only way of measuring student achievement.

The president says he doesn't want teachers just teaching students tricks for taking tests - he says that doesn't make education interesting.

The president spoke Monday at a town hall hosted by the Univision Spanish-language television network at a Washington, D.C., high school. The views he articulated on standardized testing are in line with changes proposed by his administration to the federal No Child Left Behind education law intended to make it more flexible.

The president has expressed concern that a large number of schools will be unable to meet unrealistic proficiency standards under the law.
