PLACERVILLE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities were searching Wednesday for a gunman suspected of shooting a school official at a Northern California elementary school.

A man shot an official at Louisiana Schnell School in Placerville, about 50 miles east of Sacramento, shortly before 11 a.m., said El Dorado County Sheriff's Sgt. Jim Byers. He said the man fled on foot.

Byers said no children were injured and the school remains in lockdown.

The Placerville Union School District posted a message on its website saying students were being evacuated to the El Dorado County Fairgrounds. The school district was asking parents not to try to pick up their children at the school. Parents were told they will be contacted once the students are released.

Byers said about 50 officers from various law enforcement agencies were participating in the manhunt for the suspect, who has not been identified.

KCRA-TV reported that the school official was transported to a local hospital. Byers said it's not clear what prompted the shooting.
