NEW YORK (AP) - A smoky fire beneath a New York City railroad bridge has forced the stoppage of some commuter rail service in and out of Grand Central Terminal.
The fire is beneath the 138th Street lift bridge on the Harlem River. Television images showed pilings on fire, with huge plumes of white smoke over the river and East Harlem. A fireboat is putting the blaze out.
Train service was suspended at 11:45 a.m. Trains approaching Manhattan and the south Bronx are being held at the nearest station.
