MILLBURY, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say tornados and thunderstorms that swept through the Midwest overnight killed at least five people in Ohio, destroyed 50 homes and damaged a high school gymnasium where graduation was to be held today.
Lake Township Police Chief Mark Hummer in northwest Ohio says that among those killed were a person outside the heavily damaged police department and a motorist on state Route 795 near the high school. He said the three other victims, including a young child, were from nearby Millbury.
Fire Chief Todd Walters of Lake Township says several people were taken to hospitals. Authorities are still searching through homes and Walters couldn't say whether anyone is missing.
The roof and a back wall were torn off the Lake High School gymnasium and buses were flipped and one was tossed across a school parking lot.
Severe storms and tornadoes have also been reported in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.
