HOUSTON (AP) - Somali officials are concerned that a member of a terrorist group from their country may be trying to get to Texas through Mexico. But Omar Jamal, first secretary of the Somali mission to the United Nations, said Thursday he's also worried oppressed Somalis in Latin America trying to gain asylum in the U.S. will get caught up in the terror alert.
The Homeland Security Department has asked Houston law enforcement agencies to watch for a suspected member of the al-Shabaab group, an al-Qaida ally based in Somalia.
Jamal told The AP his UN mission has fielded calls for months from Somalis whose loved ones are missing in Latin America. He hopes those legitimately trying to flee to the United States don't get caught up "in this war on terror."
