CLEVELAND (AP) - Minnesota's Joe Mauer has had a hit taken away by the umpires.

Mauer hit a sinking liner to left field with Jamey Carroll on second base in the eighth inning against Cleveland on Wednesday night. Left fielder Vinny Rottino came in to make a diving catch, but third-base umpire Mike Muchlinski gave a safe sign as Carroll came around to score.

Indians manager Manny Acta came out and argued with Muchlinski, a fill-in ump from the minor leagues. All the umpires huddled for a moment and Muchlinski reversed his call, ending the inning.

Crew chief Joe West then met Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire at the pitcher's mound for a discussion. After a moment, Gardenhire returned to the dugout and the Twins had their lead go back to 6-2.
