TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Hundreds of blue and green clad FGCU fans left the Tucker Center in Tallahassee in disappointment after the Eagle's season comes to an end with a 72-65 loss in overtime Sunday in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The loss to St. Bonaventure snaps FGCU's 21-game winning streak.
For a good part of the second half, it looked like it would be Florida Gulf Coast earning its first ever tournament win. The Eagles used an 11-0 run early in the second half to turn an eight point deficit into a five point lead. The run was highlighted by a three-pointer by senior Eglah Griffin. The shot gave FGCU 341 three-pointers for the year, breaking the Division I single-season record for three-pointers in a season. FGCU ended with 342 for the season.
Sarah Hansen led the Eagles with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
After giving up an 11-point lead in the final minutes of the game, senior Courtney Chihil's layup with 3-seconds left sent the game into overtime, tied at 58. FGCU failed to hold on to that momentum in the extra-period, making just two of seven shots in overtime.
FGCU finishes the season 29-3 overall, Atlantic Sun regular season and tournament champions, and NCAA record holder (most three-pointers in a single season).
