LEE COUNTY, Fla.- A truck driver hauling sand from a Naples beach has been fired from the project after his truck flipped on Corkscrew Road. The area just past Miromar Outlets down to Alico Road was shut down for about four hours Tuesday. The truck flipped completely on its side causing sand to spill all over the road. The cleanup effort took hours as drivers had to find alternate routes. Officials say the truck was traveling westbound down Corkscrew Road when it flipped. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. What caused the truck to flip is still under investigation, but it’s where the driver was that caused him to get fired. Transporting sand to Naples is part of the beach renourishment project. The driver was supposed to turn right onto Alico Road. The accident happened just past Alico and a Collier County spokesperson says the driver has been terminated from the project for failing to follow the route. The company the truck driver works for tells the county they will more closely monitor the roadways to ensure drivers are following the designated path. The county tells WINK News the spill will not affect progress of the project which is expected to be completed by the end of 2014. Officials also say that a portion of the roadway will likely have to be repaved because the truck also spilled diesel fuel which can erode the asphalt.
