CAPE CORAL, Fla.- For the first time, same-sex and common law couples can get the same benefits as legally married couples.

Some of those benefits include the ability to make medical or education decisions. Thursday marks the first day that couples in Cape Coral, regardless of gender, can register for domestic partnerships.

Couples can visit the City Clerk’s office at City Hall to register.

The Cape Coral City Council approved the ordinance on Nov. 3rd, making it the first city in Lee County to do so.

The first couple to register Thursday morning was Pearl Taylor and her partner Laurie.

They’re both city employees and have been together for 16 years. They were overjoyed to take this step together towards a new life.

“It will continue on as it has everyday for the last 16 years, it’s just if an emergency comes up or somebody wants something from us that we normally couldn’t provide, we can go well, somebody recognizes us,” said Taylor.
