COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- Beachgoers in Naples are feeling the effects of red tide. Florida Fish and Wildlife tells WINK News the toxic algae bloom is along the shore in the southern portion of the county. According to officials, the entire bloom is 60 miles long and 15 miles off the coast. The Kristianssons are from Sweden but they live in Naples three months out of the year. The couple says after being bothered by red tide near the pier yesterday, today they changed locations and went to the beach at North Lake Drive near Gulfshore Boulevard North.. “People were coughing, tears in the eyes, and irritated in their throat so we stayed there for an hour or so and we left. But today is much better so I guess it differs from day to day.” FWC says children, the elderly and those with asthma should stay clear from the beach while red tide is present. They say the red tide isn’t moving much right now and it’s hard to determine just how long it will stay along the shoreline. If you’re concerned, you can check out FWC’s website before heading to the beach.
