PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- A Charlotte County teenager is in the hospital after she was hit by a car on her way to the bus stop Friday morning.

15-year-old Kimberly Crowl was walking with her two sisters near the intersection of Ackerman Avenue and Wolbrette Circle.

“I heard tires squealing and a squeal that sent shivers down your spine,” said resident Courtney Shoecraft. “You heard her screaming and then she was running towards her house to get her mom.”

Family members tell WINK News it was Adrian who ran home even though she was knocked over by the impact. Her sister Taylor went to the hospital after getting her elbow clipped by the car’s side mirror. Kimberly was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital. Family members say she has a broken leg and is undergoing tests for her memory.

According to witnesses, the driver of the car that hit the girls is a 17-year-old boy.

“My husband said he held her hand the whole time until first responders got there,” said Shoecraft.

Word of the accident spread around Port Charlotte High School. Students say a pep rally was cancelled in light of the accident.

The driver in the accident has not been cited at this point.

Family members say the girls were walking with their back to the traffic and their clothes were dark.

“It is so dark the kids have no place to walk walking in the grass and unless you are right on top of them you don’t see them,” said Shoecraft.

All the girls are listed in good condition and are expected to recover. Some neighbors are shaken up by what happened and say they won’t be walking around Friday night to trick-or-treat. They say there just isn’t enough space to walk safely.
