2 years’ prison for man in unemployment fraud

MIAMI (AP) – A South Florida man will serve about two years in federal prison for stealing thousands of dollars in state unemployment insurance.

A federal judge also ordered 24-year-old Rodney Fleurimond of Miami to pay more than $60,000 in restitution. Fleurimond pleaded guilty earlier this year to aggravated identity theft and other charges.

Court records show that Fleurimond used computers at his home to access 188 fraudulent unemployment claims. Of those, he was able to obtain payments on 23 claims for the total of $60,400.

The money was paid into a variety of bank accounts controlled by Fleurimond. Bank cameras later recorded him taking money out of those accounts.

The sentence was imposed last week by U.S. District Judge Federico Moreno.
