FORT MYERS, Fla.- A man was arrested for allegedly driving off with a vehicle he was test driving.

Officials say 61-year-old William Clay asked to test drive a 2002 Ford Explorer from Lantern Motors located at 11240 S. Cleveland Ave.

An employee at the dealership says Clay was given the vehicle to test drive only around the block because it did not have a valid tag displayed.

The employee obtained a copy of Clay's drivers license and phone number before allowing him to test drive the car.

According to authorities, once Clay drove the vehicle out of the dealership, the employee observed the suspect begin to drive the opposite way he was instructed to go.

The employee tried several times to reach Clay by phone but was not able to contact him.

Officers were later able to recover the vehicle after another Lantern Motos employee found and began following the vehicle and provided its location.

Clay now faces charges for grand theft.
