COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- Isles of Capri firefighters couldn't hide their excitement Tuesday night. Voters said "No" to merging their fire department with East Naples Golden Gate Fire. The first responders were out with signs all day Tuesday askign voters to vote against it.

"They want to keep control of their own district. They want to keep control of their own tax dollars. They're supporting their firefighters," said Jorge Lara.

But Jorge Lara said his department still fears the county could step in and he wants the vote to act as a call to action for the Collier County Commissioners.

"To honor and respect and not go into an inner-management agreement with the East Naples Golden Gate Fire District," said Lara.

The East Naples Golden Gate Fire Cheif tells WINK News there is no such agreement.

"That is a false statement. There have been several.of those false statements in recent days but that is not accurate at all," said Chief Schuldt.

WINK News spoke with Isles of Capri Firefighters who said any merger would have cost them their jobs.

"It effects me and my wife, we just celebrated our year anniversary in July. Bought a house a year before that, so that's where the biggest impact comes for me," said David Thomas.
