CAPE CORAL, Fla.- Cape Coral Police want to warn businesses of a new scam that is popping up in Southwest Florida, wherein imposters pose as LCEC or FPL and threaten to turn off the electricity, unless a supposed "outstanding bill" is paid.

The scammers request that the businesses make a payment using a money transfer or “Green Dot” card.

Utilities companies will not call and demand immediate payment or ask you to use money transfer services or Green Dot cards for payment.Police want you to consider this a "red flag."

When in doubt, hang up and contact your utility company.
