LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Investigators with the Lee County Sheriff's Office say a Fort Myers man who crashed his car earlier today likely didn't die because of the crash.

Shortly before noon, deputies were called to a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Fowler Street and Page Field Commons Drive. The caller stated that the driver, later identified as 68-year-old Stanley Huntington, was possibly deceased.

The investigation shows that a 2011 Hyundai was travelling southbound on Fowler Street and was crossing the intersection of Page Field Commons Drive. Huntington suffered what appears to be a medical event that caused his vehicle to exit the roadway and strike a roadway sign.

He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Two friends of Huntington's were following him in another vehicle and witnessed the crash. The friends notified investigators that the victim was suffering from a terminal illness.

There were no injuries to Huntington consistent with a vehicle crash.

The investigation continues.
