CHARLOTTE CO, Fla.- It was one year ago today Sgt. Mike Wilson with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office was shot and killed in the line of duty.

Sgt. Wilson was responding to a domestic disturbance call at the Lakes of Toscana apartment complex on Veterans Blvd. in Port Charlotte. When he arrived on scene, the sheriff's office says he was immediately met with gunfire as he tried to go up the stairs to the second floor apartment where the disturbance happened. Deputies say Jay Vanko shot Wilson in the chest above his bullet proof vest, and then turned the gun on himself.

Hundreds of people lined the streets to pay tribute to Wilson at his funeral, and several events have honored him and his family in the year since his death.

He leaves behind a wife and three children. Sgt. Wilson spent 20 years with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office.
