Fort Myers battled through an injury plagued season last year to finish 7-3. "In all my 27 years I've never had a year where we lost so many man-power hours" said head coach Sammy Sirianni who points out that injuries aren't an excuse for losing.

All three losses for the Green Wave came against playoff teams (South Fort Myers, Charlotte and Port Charlotte).  Because they finished behind Charlotte and Port Charlotte in the 7A District 11 standings Fort Myers did not advance to the playoffs. That has the Green Wave hungry this season and has them setting big goals, "going undefeated" said senior offensive guard Clifton Fleming who Sirianni calls one of the best lineman he's ever had.

Fleming is one of the seniors who will be playing his third season on varsity. "We have a nice returning group and a lot of leadership and we've just been with each other since freshman year and it's our time" said Fleming.

Starting quarterback Dylan Degroot is back for one more year at Fort Myers. Last season he averaged 134 yards passing per game while completing 50-percent of his passes. Degroot threw 10 touchdown passes and nine interceptions while rushing for seven touchdowns.

Also returning is running back Terrance Moore. In eight games last season as a junior, Moore rushed for 1,082 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Sirianni says with 16 starters returning, experience is his teams biggest strength two days into camp. "This year with that leadership and that veteran presence it gives us a good starting point, it doesn't assure anything but at this point when you're getting started it's definitely a plus."
