CAPE CORAL, Fla.- Cape Coral Police are warning citizens of a telephone scam where suspects are posing as police detectives.
Today, the CCPD received four calls from New York, Pennsylvania, Utah and Texas about a fraud using the name of a Cape Coral Police detective. In three of the incidents, men have received a text claiming to be from a Cape Coral Police detective. The text says that they are being investigated for soliciting a 17 year-old minor and attempted sexual battery, and to contact the sender. When the victim calls, they speak to a male suspect claiming to be a Cape Coral Police detective. The impostor tells the victim that to avoid prosecution they will need to register for a program that will cost around $800. One potential victim said the suspect called him directly and attempted this scam, rather than texting.
CCPD is currently investigating.
No member of the Cape Coral Police Department will ever call to solicit monies in lieu of prosecution.
If you have any information on the identity of the suspect or have received one of these text messages or phone calls, please contact the Cape Coral Police Department at 239-574-3223.
