SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - Sarasota officials said a small plane crashed into the water off the coast, near Venice Beach.

Venice Airport contacted Sarasota Sheriff's Office regarding a small plane in distress that could not make it back to the airport around 2:45 p.m.

The pilot tried to land on the beach. The pilot of the 1972 Piper Cherokee and his passenger have been rescued and were uninjured.

A man and one of his children, who were walking on the beach were apparently injured by the plane. That man has died.

A girl was transported by BayFlite to All Children's Hospital and is believed to be in critical condition.
