FORT MYERS, Fla.- The driver of an SUV caused a two-vehicle accident in the area of Palm Beach Blvd. and Van Buren St. around 9:45 this morning, before fleeing the scene on foot to a nearby convenience store to steal beer.

Fort Myers Police arrested Jeffery Skipper, 52, for DUI with property damage, leaving the scene of a crash with damage, refusing to submit to DUI test and petit theft.

Police were called to the scene where they found a blue Toyota Corolla with extensive front end damage. The vehicle had pulled off the roadway and was found in the Bravo Supermarket. A white GMC Yukon with severe front end damage was located 200 yards away, half on the curb.

Witnesses said the driver fled on foot down Van Buren St. While interviewing witnesses, several patrons began yelling and signaling to the officers that the suspect had just stolen beer from the nearby Sunoco station. Officers caught up with the suspect, later identified as Skipper, and found him in possession of four Natural Ice beers. He also had shards of glass in his hair and on the front of his shirt, as well as blood on his arms. Skipper was disoriented and confused. EMS responded and medically cleared Skipper before officers took him into custody.

The clerk at the Sunoco told officers that a bloody gentleman entered the store, took the beer and left the store without paying.

Skipper told officers he had been drinking for two days. He was arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail.
