CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's deputies arrested 27-year-old Steven Berkey yesterday on a warrant, after allegedly stealing his boss's work van, complete with a U-Haul trailer full of tools back in January.

Some time between January 9th and 10th, deputies met with victim at Microtel regarding an employee who had taken a work vehicle without permission. The van was hauling a trailer full of tools, valued at over $20,000. Berkey was never given permission to drive the company vehicle.

While entering the vehicle into the system as stolen, the deputy noticed the vehicle was already listed as abandoned by Sarasota Sheriff's Office. It was then discovered that Berkey was arrested following a pursuit on Tamiami Trail.

The Sarasota deputy realized the van had two blown front tires and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle fled, resulting in a pursuit. Stop sticks were used, and the van pulled into a nearby gas station. Berkey was taken into custody, and allegedly told the deputy he had fled from him because he was driving the vehicle without a valid license.

Berkey now faces charges of grand theft and grand theft auto.
