BONITA SPRINGS, Fla.- A Bonita Springs couple, planning to have a relaxing day of sailing, on the Gulf were met with shock on Saturday when they went to retrieve their boat.

"We couldn't believe it," boat owner Sherry Brown said. "We don't know anyone who would steal from us."

The Browns purchased a 1968 Corvette sailboat from Craiglist two months ago. They had been anchoring the boat at New Pass, where according to Florida Fish and Wildlife officials, the public is allowed to anchor boats.

FWC says they did not tow the boat.

"When you said into New Pass you have to know what you're doing," Brown said. "[That's] because of the sandbars on each side."

Brown said she and her husband believe someone sailed off on their sailboat sometime between Thursday and Friday, likely cutting the anchor from the boat.

"We really loved that boat," Brown said. "We were planning on sailing to Key West."

Lee County Sheriffs deputites are currently investigating the suspected crime.
