Fort Myers, Fla. - A year and a half ago, WINK News interviewed Fort Myers athlete, Jeff Evans. He had only been doing CrossFit for 8 months, but already set some high goals.
"Get my name out there, compete in the CrossFit Games and end up winning," he said in November, 2012. "I want to be the fittest person on the planet."
Today his goal is coming into focus; that's because Sunday, July 20, he's going to the CrossFit Games in Carson, California.
"It's been a long journey," Evans said. "Last year after my first regionals of being under a year of CrossFit, I knew what I needed to work on and what it took to get to the games and that's what I worked on for a whole year."
By practicing handstand push-ups, muscle-ups on the rings and other body-weight movements, Evans has sculpted himself into top shape. Tearful on the podium at the regional competition in May of this year, Evans thought about all the things in his life he almost missed.
"At one point, I tried to commit suicide," he said, "I was a really depressed kid and it's just the way I grew up," Evans continued. "To me, that was one of the happiest moments of my life because I wouldn't have been here if I would have done that."
Every workout has been a push for him; not only to get stronger physically, but also mentally. He says, not if, but when he becomes the fittest person on the planet, he hopes he can inspire others to stay strong and keep focus.
