CRAWFORDVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Police say a 4-year-old girl drowned in a pool after wandering away from a family gathering.
The Wakulla County Sherriff's Department reports that family members at a gathering in Crawfordville on Friday discovered the child motionless in the deep end of the pool.
The preliminary autopsy determined that the death is consistent with an accidental drowning.
Family members told investigators that the girl was last seen about 20 minutes before she was found.
A sheriff's office spokesman says pool toys were found in the water, and investigators believe the girl may have fallen in while reaching for a floating item.
The Tallahassee Democrat (http://on.tdo.com/1zCvSwq) reports that about 69 percent of the 42 child drowning deaths that have occurred so far this year in Florida were among children younger than three.
