SANIBEL, Fla. - You may have noticed some smoke on Sanibel Island Sunday. A 40-acre brush fire was burning through an overgrown patch of the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

It was set by federal fire professionals to thin underbrush that could someday fuel a wildfire. FWC says there will be two additional burns this week:

ON MONDAY JULY 14, 2014 - the burn will be in the area north of Sanibel Captiva Road and west of Tarpon Road - sections of shared use path will be closed (TARPON BAY ROAD TO RABBIT ROAD).

ON TUESDAY, JULY 15, 2014, the burn will be in the area along Legion Curve, North of Sanibel Captiva Road, between the Sanibel Recreation Center and Sea Spray Lane -
sections of shared use path will be closed (SANIBEL RECREATION CENTER TO SEA SPRAY LANE).
