CAPE CORAL, Fla.,- An American hero is given a prestigious honor. A new U.S. Army Reserve center in Cape Coral is named in memory of Staff Sgt. Marc Scialdo. The local hero was killed in Afghanistan just over a year ago. WINK News was there as the center was officially dedicated.
"He'd be truly, deeply honored, any sense of the word, whatever honor means to you, Marc would feel that honor," said Scialdo's sister, Jackie Nelson.
These words on this plaque say it all.
"It played a great tribute to the type of soldier he was and the type of person he was," said Nelson.
A soldier who gave it all in the defense of our country has received a hero's honor.
"It's very surreal, it makes it real, and it's been the hardest year of our lives."
The Cape Coral Army Reserve Center is continuing the legacy of Staff Sgt. Marc Scialdo by naming the new center in his honor.
"It's a paramount honor, we really couldn't ask for more from the support of our community, from Naples all the way to Cape Coral."
With heavy hearts, Marc's wife, family, and fellow comrades looked on as their soldier was remembered under a sea of flags.
"Marc was an amazing guy. He was a light and an energy, that he brought to the room, everyone says it, it's not just his family doting."
Inside the new -Staff Sergeant Marc A. Scialdo U.S. Army Reserve Center lies his uniform, his honors and all things that represent the soldier.
"We will definitely visit the reserve to look at his case and all the memories we put in the case that shows who mark truly is," Nelson told WINK News.
It's the tribute truly fit for one of America's fallen hero's.
"He's going to be the guy that people have to live up to, everybody who steps foot in that door will have to meet that standard, it's great to have him be that guy," said Staff Sgt. Matthew Loebs.
In March of last year, the helicopter crew chief was killed on the battlefield in Afghanistan.
