GOLDEN GATE ESTATES, Fla.- A 12-year-old boy was inside a home on the 300 block of Everglades Blvd. S. when a fire broke out in the attic. The child escaped and a firefighter later rescued a puppy that was also inside the home.

According to the Chief of the East Naples/Golden Gate Fire District, the boy smelled smoke and ran to a neighbor to call 911 around 2:45 p.m.

Sixteen firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. They're now monitoring hot spots.

The family cannot stay in the house due to extensive smoke damage.

Investigators are trying to figure out what caused the fire.

Everglades Blvd South at 4th Avenue SE was shut down due to the fire, but has since been reopened.
