FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A former law partner of convicted Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for violating federal campaign finance laws.
A federal judge in Fort Lauderdale sentenced 52-year-old Russell Adler on Friday. He had faced up to five years in prison.
Prosecutors say Adler helped orchestrate thousands of dollars in bundled contributions from the now-defunct Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler law firm's employees and attorneys to John McCain's 2008 campaign for president and Charlie Crist's run in 2010 for the U.S. Senate. Authorities say the contributions were illegally reimbursed by the law firm.
Rothstein is serving 50 years behind bars for a $1.2 billion scam involving investments in fake legal settlements. More than a dozen others have also been convicted.
