PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- A bicyclist was killed Friday night after a vehicle lost control and hit him on Elkcam Blvd. at McGuire Ave.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 39-year-old Howard Tomlin of North Port was ejected from his bike, tumbled onto the grass and landed on the pavement of McGuire Ave. Tomlin was transported to Bayfront Port Charlotte where he was pronounced deceased at 9:48 p.m.

The driver of the vehicle, 23-year-old David McGovern, was not injured. He had two passengers in the vehicle with him and neither of them were injured either.

The Nissan Maxima that McGovern was driving rotated clockwise into a ditch on the east side of Elkcam Blvd., just south of McGuire Ave., traveled through the ditch, and overturned before traveling onto the sidewalk, striking Tomlin.

The investigation continues.

If anyone witnessed the pre-crash driving pattern and/or speed of McGovern's vehicle (a 2007 Nissan that was white in color) as it  traveled northbound on Elkcam Blvd. at 9:28 p.m., they are asked to contact FHP at 239-938-1800.
