MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. - A former Manatee County deputy accused of capital sexual battery has been captured after being on the run for more than 20 years.
60-year-old Joseph May is accused of raping a six-year-old girl back in the 70s. May wasn't arrested for the crime until 1990.
Federal officials say May fled to avoid prosecution when the case went to trial in 1993. Alaskan authorities tracked May down after they say he used his late step-brother's name to apply for a driver's license and unemployment benefits.
May is now facing federal identity theft charges in alaska and could be put to death if he is extradited back to florida to face the capital sexual battery charge.
