LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Cape Coral police are investigating whether suspects arrested in a dollar store robbery Wednesday night may be linked to three other robberies in the area.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by WINK News, a woman saw two men walking into the Family Dollar in the 2600 block of Skyline Boulevard around 9 p.m. Wednesday. The men were wearing masks and had a handgun.
The witness watched as the men ran out the store and took off in car. At the intersection of Skyline Boulevard and Veterans Parkway, police found the suspects' car crashed. Officers arrested the driver 25 year old Jonas Griffin. The passenger ran from the car.
Andre Panetta lives a few blocks from the crash site and was home when it happened.
"He hopped the fence on the side, came in my lanai, tried to hide in my pool equipment area and cops were here right behind him in a matter of minutes," Panetta said. "They tased him twice and it was done."
Police arrested the suspect 24 year old Justin Diggs.
"There was 10 to 12 cops they were on him right away," said Panetta.
Cape Coral police are investigating whether the two suspects are linked to three other robberies in the area. The locations include a Family Dollar in the 2200 block of Fowler Street on June 3rd, a Dollar General in the 700 block of Gretchen Avenue South June 9th and a Dollar General in the 900 block of NE Pine Island Road June 13th. In at least two of the other robberies surveillance video shows two masked men with handguns.
WINK News checked and found both suspects have a lengthy criminal history. Justin Diggs has arrests dating back to 2012, that include cocaine possession, aggravated assault and aggravated battery. Diggs was on probation Wednesday when the robbery happened. Jonas Griffin has arrests dating back to 2005, that include second degree murder, aggravated battery, and resisting an officer. Court records show Griffin was never prosecuted for the second degree murder charge in 2009.
