LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. - A lightning strike may have led to a fire Thursday afternoon hat destroyed the interior of a Lehigh Acres home.

It happened at the corner of Country Club Parkway and Newbern Avenue. Furniture, food, pictures, almost everything inside the home is damaged and almost unrecognizable from fire or smoke.

Tenant, Merdit Gordon tells WINK News she was inside when the lightning struck the house. Immediately after, she said she noticed smoke coming from the refrigerator and then flames. She tried to fight it but had to call 911.

Gordon was able to get out of the home safely before the smoke got too intense. "I just hurried up," Gordon said. "I pulled the refrigerator out of the wall but it couldn't stop the fire. The fire was still burning. I never knew the whole house was engulfed like this. I never knew. Everything turned black. I never knew it moved so fast.

The landlord said the owners of this home actually live in Canada. Right now, the red cross is working with Gordon, who lives here with her son, getting them all they need.

Fire officials are investigating the exact cause of the fire, but they tell us, it was likely lightning.
