FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla.- Adding a little more beauty the beach! WINK News has uncovered plans to makeover the gateway to Fort Myers Beach. Things like visually improving the look of San Carlos Boulevard to making the road safer.
"This is the gateway to our island, our little paradise, and it doesn't look like that right now," said FMB Vice Mayor, Dan Andre.
For the miles you have to drive down San Carlos Boulvard to get onto Fort Myers Beach it's not necessarily appealing to the eye.
"I've never stopped, nothing has really ever interested me there on the way here, it's the bridge that really gets you, it's the bridge that says I've arrived," said Laura Logie.
This view is what some call the million dollar view and it's often what people think about when heading to the island.
"When I go over the bridge and get that spectacular view, my husband and I always say to ourselves, we've arrived at Fort Myers Beach!"
But, the future of San Carlos Boulevard could soon be seeing more beauty on the beach.
"When you come through Bonita Springs it's very pretty, but when you come in on the north side, it's not very attractive," said Andre. A list of possible improvements are on the table for the state to review. Some of the ideas that got the most votes is side walks on both sides of the bridge, an intersection at Times Square and Seafarers Village and adding landscape to the route.
"Imagine coming down San Carlos and you have palm trees on both sides, palm trees and bushes in the middle."
Other ideas didn't rank so high but are being considered are a toll booth, better crosswalks, and a times square roundabout.
"They are starting with a blank canvas, they are going to look at all the possibilities."
Once approved, the state will fund the project, which means it is entirely separate from the Estero Boulevard redevelopment project the county is set to start in January.
