NORTH PORT, Fla.- North Port Police arrested a 27-year-old man who allegedly was caught with 7 lbs. of marijuana on him, after leading officers on a foot chase and allowing the vehicle he was driving to roll into a nearby canal.

Today, North Port Police, Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office intercepted a package containing marijuana that was scheduled to be delivered to a vacant house within the city limits of North Port. Detectives conducted a controlled delivery of the package to the vacant house. Detectives watched the package until they say Josua Hearns picked it up.

Hearns' vehicle reportedly arrived at the residence around 12:30 p.m. Detectives attempted a traffic stop, but Hearns accelerated toward two police vehicles that had their emergency lights on, causing them to take evasive action to avoid being rammed by the suspect’s vehicle.

A short vehicle pursuit began and ended on Monterey Lane. The suspect then bailed out of his vehicle, according to police, and attempted to run on foot as the vehicle continued rolling into a canal.

After a short foot chase, Hearns was taken into custody in the canal, along with a black plastic bag that contained approximately 7 pounds and 10 ounces of marijuana.

Hearns is now facing the following charges:

Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement Officer (2 counts)

Sell, Manufacture, Possession with Intent to Sell a controlled Substance

Fleeing/Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer

Resisting/Obstructing an Officer Without Violence
