CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's deputies arrested 23-year-old Kayla Oxenham for child abuse yesterday after she allegedly burned her children with a stick back in March.

The children, both under the age of 8, were interviewed after a report was made to the Department of Children and Families on March 26.

According to the children, Oxenham grabbed one by the hair and slammed her head into the wall several times before kicking her. In the same week, Oxenham burned both children with a stick, saying that she "forgot how much she loved fire," according to her arrest report.

Neighbors tell WINK News they were disgusted when they heard of the allegation.

"Mortified that someone would do that. Then come to find out that it is my neighbor thats insane, " said Neighbor Jessica Nystrom.

The children said Oxenham used a lighter to light the stick on fire and touch it to the children's arms, so that she could identify them as her children.

A medical examination on the children showed marks consistant with burn injuries.

On April 17, Oxenham was interviewed and she denied grabbing the children by the hair and hitting them, but would not answer questions about burning them without her lawyer present.

According to DCF, Oxenham's children were removed from their mother's care and placed in the custody of the father of the youngest child.

Oxenham was arrested and is out of jail on $15,000 bond.
