PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's detectives are attempting to identify a man who allegedly tried to cash a forged check at a local bank last month.
According to reports, a man presented a check for more than $3,500 from a Punta Gorda business at the Charlotte State Bank branch, located at 24163 Peachland Blvd., on May 22. The man gave the teller out-of-state identification, which coupled with the amount of the check, made the clerk suspicious. She called the business and was told they had not issued the check number in question.
A representative from the business went to the bank and found that the check was an older style check that the business had not used for about a year. The man had left the bank when he learned the bank was not going to cash the check.
The man was wearing glasses and a dark T-shirt when he was at the bank. Detectives are unsure whether the identification he presented was legitimately his own.
Anyone with information concerning the identity of the man is asked to please call the Sheriff’s Office at (941) 639-2101 (ask for Economic Crimes), or Crime Stoppers at 800-780-TIPS (8477).
