CRAWFORDVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say an inmate at a Florida Panhandle jail hanged himself in his cell over the weekend.
The Wakulla County Sheriff's Office reports that 39-year-old Jerry Jackie Kitchens of Seminary, Mississippi, was found dead Saturday evening by a corrections officer making a routine hourly inmate check. Officials say Kitchens was alone in the cell when he hanged himself with a bed sheet.
Authorities say Kitchens was arrested in April after he and a woman were stopped by Wakulla County deputies. Authorities say the vehicle was loaded with camping gear, a box of stolen knives, two stolen handguns, prescription pills, narcotics patches and $5,000.
The Tallahassee Democrat (http://goo.gl/woC2nC ) reports that Kitchens had been set to go to prison in Mississippi when he fled to Florida.
