NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. - Lee County Sheriff's detectives have arrested the so-called "Wigged Bandit."
Matthew Grant, 48, is charged with robbery without a weapon in the May 22 robbery of the Wells Fargo Bank, located at 5500 Bayshore Road.
Both K9 and Aviation Units tried to locate him. Grant allegedly entered the bank and passed a note to a teller. The note implied an explosive device had been placed in the bank and demanded cash. The victim told the robber they needed to get the money from the back. Moments later, Grant exited the bank without any cash and was reportedly seen either on foot or bicycle heading to the east toward a nearby shopping plaza.
Detectives followed up on several leads and also received tips from Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers during the investigation. They didn't have to look far to find Grant, who was already sitting in the Lee County Jail on unrelated charges of Fraud and Dealing in Stolen Property. Following an interview with Grant, detectives had all they needed to add the bank robbery charge to the suspect's rap sheet.
