FORT MYERS, Fla - Fire destoryed the front unit of a triplex home near Page Field in Fort Myers Monday.

Neighbors on Fourth Street reported seeing smoke billowing from the home and quickly called 911.

Rose Hayden says, "It really freaked me out, I thought it was going to spread in our neighborhood, in the back of our apartments." She adds, "there was dark clouds of smoke in the back, and then what happened is I hurried up and called 911 really fast, I was really panicking."

One unit was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived. The three people who lived there made it out of the building to safety, but two family dogs died in the fire.

South Trail Firefighters say the fire started in the garage but they're still investigating the cause.

EMS and additional fire crews were on scene to keep firefighters healthy and hydrated in such hot and humid conditions today.

Lee County EMS checked firefighters' blood pressure and temperature to keep everyone safe. Firefighter Charlie Russo says they wear about 80 pounds of gear. He says, "if we didnt have the mutual aide or the chiefs didnt work out some type of coverage system, we wouldn't be able to make any kind of an entry. We'd be done, our bodies would be done, our core temperature would be...we'd be done physically before we got inside."
