Fort Myers, Fla. -- Are you looking for a forever furry friend but worry about adoption fees? This upcoming weekend (May 31st, June 1st) you can adopt a pet for free from seven Lee County shelters, as part of Maddie's Pet Adoption Days.
Despite the fee waiver, people hoping to adopt will still have to go through the standard adoption process, fill out an application and get approved.
For every pet adopted, Maddie's Fund, a family foundation inspired by a Miniature Schnauzer named Maddie, will donate money to the shelter or rescue group. To date, Maddie's Fund has awarded $11.4 million to the participating groups that have adopted out a total of 15,154 dogs and cats during past events.
This is the first time the event is being held in Lee County. Last year, Alachua County was the only Florida participant, and the Alachua County Humane Society adopted out 118 animals.
Participating Lee County Shelters include:
Animal Refuge Center, Inc.
Golden Retriever Rescue of Southwest Florida
Gulf Coast Humane Society
Haven on Earth Animal League
Helping Paws Animal Sanctuary
Lee County Domestic Animal Services
P.A.W.S. Lee County
