SANIBEL, Fla.- The United States Coast Guard has ended a search and rescue of a sailboat in distress near Sanibel.

The report of a sailboat that capsized came in to officials around 7:00 p.m. last night.

The marine units for Sanibel and Iona-McGregor along with the Lee County Sheriff Chopper also aided in the search.

Coast Guard Station Fort Myers Beach said they received a radio call from a man Tuesday evening, reporting his 22-foot white sailing vessel was taking on water, one mile west of Sanibel Island.

All communications with the boater have been lost, the Coast Guard along with the Lee County Sheriff's Office and Florida Fish & Wildlife spent hours searching by water and air.

Crews focused their search off the coast of Sanibel Island, Fort Myers Beach, San Carlos Bay, the Caloosahatchee River and Pine Island.

The Coast Guard is asking the public to call them at (727) 824-7506 if they saw anything or know anything. As of Wednesday afternoon, no one had called the number with information.
