LEE COUNTY, Fla.- The man convicted of brutally murdering a woman inside her Three Oaks home, over money, will spend life behind bars.
Dustin Jaye was sentenced to life in prison without parole, and with that sentence came harsh words from a Lee County judge.
Jaye didn't say a word, and stared at the floor as Judge Frank Porter told him that society was not safe with him on the streets. Porter then told the 25-year-old he'd be spending the rest of his life in prison, and that it's exactly what he deserved.
For Lindsay Striano, today was a day she'd been waiting for for two years: the day her aunt's killer was told he'd now spend the rest of his life behind bars.
"Is this justice for her? Absolutely," said Lindsay. "Wherever she is right now, she's throwing a big dance party."
A jury found Jaye guilty of slitting Debra Striano's throat in July 2012. This afternoon, Judge Frank Porter did not hold back.
"...Basically decapitated her. I don't know how you can look in a mirror at yourself and live with yourself," the judge said.
Prosecutors say money was the motive. Striano's longtime boyfriend, Russell Myers, said he had thousands in the home.
"And you miss Debbie everyday? I really do. I talk to her all the time," said Myers.
That money was never found.
"It didn't have to be that way. Because my aunt is such a gentle, loving person, my aunt would have given you whatever you wanted," said Lindsay.
Jaye did speak in court.
"I just want the family of Debbie Striano to know I'm very sorry for what happened to her," he said.
But her family says that apology is not enough.
"I do not accept the apology. I don't think an apology could ever be just, but I want him to know I forgive him," said Lindsay.
Jaye was also convicted of burglary and animal cruelty for stabbing Debra's dog. Those sentences will be served at the same time.
